ARTIST STATEMENT

It is a startling experience as a child to feel you are suffocating in air. I learned a new word at the age of six - asthma.

The closest thing I could relate this to at this young age was drowning. I was fascinated that fish lived in water but suffocated in air as I experienced. Thus began my fascination of fish.

When moving from the Midwest to Manhattan, I learned an old world painting technique using a "dead palette" and returned to fish. What intrigues me is capturing fish looking very much alive with crisp colors and clear eyes. captured for eternity and yet very much gone and ready for consumption.
